Praying for your baby

One of the most important things we can do as mothers is pray for our children. They don't have to be born in order for us to cover them in prayer. One of my favorite things during my pregnancy was laying my hands on my belly and praying for my Little Sprout.

Every day I would pray for the baby. I would invite the Holy Spirit to minister to our baby and would pray for the particular weeks development. I would also pray that our baby would come to know the Lord at an early age, and pray for things that I wanted God to do in the baby's life.  Most often I prayed for god to grow, and bless the baby. I would pray the Armor of God over the baby and the Aaronic Blessing found in Numbers 6:24-26:

“The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace. ”

If you don't know where to get started, or are nervous about praying for your baby, there are tons of great books on praying for your unborn baby. There are tons of devotionals too that you can do as a couple. I encourage you to take this time not just to grow a baby, but also your faith. Reading together as a couple is a great way to encourage spiritual growth and build a strong foundation for your family. This is a great resource from Crosswalk on praying for your children.

This week's action: Begin praying and reading the Word over your baby. Not only will the baby be blessed, but the baby will learn your voice. Get started by checking out this post from Circle of Moms.

Dig Deeper: Find a great couples devotional.  Two of my favorites are Expectant Moments and Night Light. Night Light, is not specifically pregnancy related, but it is a fantastic devotional for couples and I cannot recommend it enough. They also have a devotional for parents, but I haven't read it yet.

The Lord is our healer

Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. Jeremiah 33:6

When I was about 35 or so weeks pregnant, I was baking cookies and I thought my water broke. I called my husband, told him this was not a drill and went to the hospital. When I got there I was fine, but the baby's heart had a funky beat. We spent the rest of the day getting fetal echo-cardiograms, ultrasounds, and we spent a lot of time in shock and were really struggling. I was fearful that I wouldn't get the chance to meet the little one that I had carried and cared for.

The doctor explained that the baby was essentially having a heart hiccup, and that he should grow out of it by the time he was born. We went home and were on our faces before God. We prayed and my husband fasted and we trusted the word. I created a list of verses about healing and spoke them over the baby. The next week when we went in for the follow-up appointment, the baby's heart was completely fine. It was working perfectly. God had heard our cry, and healed our baby. We left that appointment with so much joy. We knew that God had a plan for our baby whether the appointment went well or not. We were overwhelmed by God's grace, mercy, and love for our baby.

I believe that God allowed the whole thing to happen just so that he could show me that he heals. If you are facing a situation where your baby is struggling there are several things that you can do:

  • Apply the word- God has given us the authority to heal in his word. See Luke 9:1. Speak verses of healing over your baby.
  • Pray- Applying your energy to prayer, keeps you from applying that to worry. I am a firm believer that pestering the Lord until he hears you and you hear from him is a good thing.

  • Take Communion- The body and blood of Christ are powerful. The blood of Jesus cleanses, heals, and restores. It is truly amazing.
  •  Fast- Although abstaining from food while pregnant isn't a good idea, fast from sweets or tv.
  •  Call other Christians to fasting and prayer with you.
  • Trust that God with heal your child, if not in this life, then in the next.

Praying for our children is super important, especially when they are in our wombs. Next week we'll talk about praying for our children.

Here are some of the verses I applied:

Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.

Malachi 4:2
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.

1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Jeremiah 30:17
For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal,
declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’

Matthew 8:7
And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.”

Jeremiah 33:6
Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.

Isaiah 58:8
Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

Psalm 107:20-22
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

Luke 13:13
And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.

Matthew 9:28-29
When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.”

Ezekiel 37:3-5
And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.

Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Luke 9:1
And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases,

1 Corinthians 12:9
To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

Isaiah 54:17
No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 119:146-149
I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise. Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O Lord, according to your justice give me life.

James 5:14-16
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

 Job 5:26
You shall come to your grave in ripe old age, like a sheaf gathered up in its season.

2 Kings 20:5-6
“Turn back, and say to Hezekiah the leader of my people, Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord, and I will add fifteen years to your life. I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for my own sake and for my servant David's sake.”

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

1 Samuel 12:16
Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes.

Exodus 14:13
And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.

Exodus 14:14
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Numbers 6:25-27
The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Our Body, a Temple

"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself" 1 Corinthians 6:19

When we're first pregnant we are in awe of the work going on in our bodies. It's easy to believe that we're not just an incubator, but that we're a temple. But as the feet swell, and disappear, sleepless nights become commonplace, and more time is spent with your arms around the toilet than your husband, it's easy to lose sight of this. It's also easy to feel like you staring in the latest alien movie. I promise you will not have anything come flying out of your chest.

The whole of pregnancy is a challenge and a joy, but where we keep our focus makes all the difference. We can spend so much time focusing on how sick we are, or how tired we are that we miss the blessing of pregnancy. We are the ones that get to carry a new life into the world.

We are a temple whether we feel like it or not. We have to treat ourselves as a temple too. I don't mean a trip to the spa every weekend, but a little exercise and eating well is good not just for you, but the gift growing inside of you.

This weeks actions:

Commit to memorizing 1 Corinthians 6:19 and pray that God would show you how to create a temple that honors Him.

Look for all of the amazing things happening in your pregnancy right now, write them down. Look at them when you're feeling more like a hunk of rubble than the temple the word says we are.

Read about the temple of God in the Old Testament and spend some time praising God that he has made his home in you!
